Science, education, and community working together to prevent and manage concussions

Welcome to MCMI

Welcome to our new website. The Maine Concussion Management Initiative (MCMI) is a pioneer in concussion research and education outreach. We launched our program in 2009 with a mission to promote increased awareness about concussions among athletes, coaches, parents and school administrators.  This project has been implemented in more than 100 Maine high schools and the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Essential to the success of MCMI is the continuing relationship with Colby College.  Colby’s 2,000 students come from nearly every state and more than 70 countries to take advantage of a curriculum that encourages educational exploration, and collaborative learning experiences led by world-class professors. For a select group of Colby students, MCMI offers research opportunities that have helped guide students toward careers in science and medicine.  We are proud to play a role in Colby’s important STEM curriculum.

Recently, we developed the Head Injury Tracker (H.I.T.)  - a tool for athletic trainers and school officials to easily record and track concussions. With this tracker, schools gain a better understanding of concussion and subsequent recovery in their student population.

Key partners include the Maine Athletic Trainers Association, the Maine Principals Association, the Maine Medical Association, Orthopedic Associates, the Maine Department of Education, the Maine department of Health and Human Services, and the Maine School Nurses Association.

The success of the MCMI model and the data collected has led to partnerships with institutions across the country including: Boston Children’s Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and the University of Colorado at Denver.

The expansion of our program model into Massachusetts creates a new opportunity for MCMI to continue be seen as a national leader in concussion education, advocacy, and training.  In August, MCMI sponsors the annual Concussion Summit, which brings researchers, clinicians, and program administrators together to advance understanding of concussion.
